Our food systems face enormous economic, social and environmental challenges. Many solutions exist, but their implementation meets with many barriers. These barriers are a consequence of the complexity of our food systems. This lecture starts by discussing challenges and solutions in a systematic way. Then, we explore the meanings and consequences of the complexity of our food systems. Finally, we discuss the different ways we can intervene in, and thus change, complex systems, acknowledging the importance of mental models, systems thinking and learning by doing.
